SOCIAL WORKERS

The Sumter School District School Social Worker Department is dedicated to supporting the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional success of all students through comprehensive, student-centered services. Our department works collaboratively with students, families, educators, administrators, and community partners to identify barriers to learning, strengthen student well-being, and promote positive school outcomes.

As part of the district’s commitment to strengthening internal systems of support, the School Social Worker Department has implemented an enhanced service delivery model that expands beyond traditional truancy services, home visits, and resource coordination. This model incorporates behavioral health screeners, life skills development, crisis intervention, behavioral support services, and individualized behavioral and social-emotional plans of care tailored to student needs.

Using a trauma-informed, tiered system of support, school social workers provide prevention, intervention, and responsive services to improve attendance, increase student engagement, and support emotional wellness. The department also collaborates with MTSS, 504, IEP, crisis response, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure students receive appropriate interventions and support services.

The School Social Worker Department is committed to building strong family and community partnerships by connecting students and families with resources, advocating for student needs, supporting McKinney-Vento services, and promoting safe, supportive, and equitable learning environments across the district. Through data-driven practices and evidence-based interventions, Sumter School District school social workers help strengthen the district’s ability to respond effectively to student concerns while empowering students to reach their full potential.

Each school in the district has a dedicated school social worker assigned to support students and families. Parents, guardians, and staff are encouraged to contact their school counselor to learn more about the referral process and how to access school social work services.
